2009 Tiger Statistical Leaders
The Beaver Falls Tigers had one of its most successful campaigns in many years in 2009. Narrowly missing the section championship by one game, the Tigers finished the regular season winning 15 of 18 games to finish 15-5. Beaver Falls was led by a veteran pitching staff in Marlo Cleckley and Tyler Schuster leading the way. Cleckley was 6-3 with a 1.09 ERA and was second in the WPIAL in strikeouts with 94 in 64 innings pitched. Schuster was equally impressive with a 6-4 mark and 2.29 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched. Sophomore Aaron Ramirez was 4-0 pitching, but was a beneficiary of good timing in many instances having only pitched 19.66 innings in achieving the four victories.Offensively, the Tigers only batted .272 on the season, but were led by three players that batted over .300. Evan Chiappetta led the team with a .394 batting average while David Ginand batted .333 and led the team with 17 RBI. Tyler Schuster batted .300. Sophomore Mike Stevenson led the club with two home runs. The Tigers were involved in twelve one-run games (9-3) this season, with the signature win of this team being the WPIAL first round playoff victory over Seton-LaSalle. The Tiger narrowly missed advancing to the state playoffs by losing a 1 run lead in the seventh inning versus South Fayette, the eventual PIAA runner-up.
The Tigers were 10-0 at Tiger Field this year, the first team to accomplish the feat. The team also participated at PNC Park in a game for the first time in history. It was a special year for many reasons in 2009 for the Tiger baseball team. Four players were named to the All-Section team: David Ginand (2nd time), Evan Chiappetta, Marlo Cleckley, and Admire Carter. Tyler Schuster was named to the BC Times Roaring Twenties team with Chiappetta and Cleckley.
