Beaver Falls Tigers Baseball 2007

WPIAL QUARTERFINALIST

13-8 Overall Record;  7-5 Section 5-AA Record

Under the leadership of three talented and strong willed seniors, the Beaver Falls Tigers had a very strong playoff run and a successful regular season.  With key section victories over Mohawk, Neshannock, and two wins over Ellwood City, the Tigers advanced to the WPIAL playoffs for a fourth consecutive season. In the WPIAL playoffs, the Tigers defeated New Brighton in nine innings behind the strong pitching of Brandon Rue in the Preliminary round.  With strong pitching by freshman Marlo Cleckley in the first round, the Tigers knocked off a senior led Beaver Bobcat team by a 4-2 score.  The Tigers showed up ready to play in the quarterfinals against Riverview, but the Raiders pulled off a comeback in extra innings to end the Tigers amazing run.

The Tigers featured a much improved offense in 2007, cutting their strikeouts almost in half from 2006. Beaver Falls had a team batting average of .349 during the regular season. Led by Torian Cyrus (.431),  Ryan Chiappetta (413), and Justin Sobona (.367), the Tigers were never out of a ballgame.  Leadoff hitter Brandon Rue, who was 7-4 on the mound, had an on-base percentage of .562 on the season.  Ryan Chiappetta led the offense in the playoffs with a .417 average, while Sobona batted .333 in the playoffs.  Three freshman earned starting positions on the team (Dave Ginand, Evan Chiappetta, and Marlo Cleckley), which was likely a first in team history.  The Tigers were 5-1 at home in section play in 2007.
