Beaver Falls Tigers Baseball 1985

Section 11-4; 17-6 Overall; WPIAL Third Place

The 1985 edition of Beaver Falls baseball had a spectacular season.  This was the first winning baseball season in many years for Beaver Falls.  The Tigers opened their year with three straight wins over Center, Freedom, and Beaver.  However, their next game against Hopewell ended in a 6-5 defeat.  The boys soon got back on a winning track by defeating Blackhawk 8-4 and winning over Center and Freedom.  This was the first year in Tiger history that a baseball team from Beaver Falls qualified for the state tournament.  Although the Tigers were not successful in winning the WPIAL championship, they put up a tremendous battle.  They won three of four playoff games and the WPIAL consolation game to qualify for PIAA play.  The Tigers had three senior lettermen, seven junior and five sophomores earn letters.  Although they may have fallen short of their goal, the Tigers are a young team with eleven returning lettermen.  Benny Carter and Gregg Frankhouser were the leading hitters for the Tigers with .463 and .373 averages respectively.  Gary Brown and Carter were the big hitters this year while senior pitcher Scott Hoschar was 5-2 on the season.    Excerpted from Tiger Volume 69.
